Israeli is a hot bed for technology startups, and the same is true for the Quantum computing space. These talented folk are now out of stealth.

In the beginning, companies built small quantum computers with tens and even hundreds of qubits. It was an important milestone for science, but with limited practical value.

If a startup is talking about the source or light, you can bet they are into photonics. This is true for this startup.

Revolutionizing photonic quantum computing

I think many of us can agree, photonics is the only way to deliver useful quantum computers. This requires large-scale error-corrected systems with millions of qubits.

This is again a Tel Aviv story. Per capita this is clearly one of the most innovative cities in the world. Three serial entrepreneurs and a leading Professor from the Weizmann Institute of Science join forces to establish Quantum Source and actualize a breakthrough technology that will enable photonic quantum computers that are 50,000x more efficient than state-of-the-art implementations.

Quantum Source, an Israel-based quantum computing startup, has come out of stealth mode with a $15 million Seed funding round co-led by Grove Ventures, Pitango First and Eclipse Ventures.

The company has serious leadership credentials, founded by Oded Melamed, Gil Semo, Dan Charash, and Professor Barak Dayan — a Senior Scientist and founder and head of the Quantum Optics lab at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

The startup appears to have been founded as recently as October, 2021.

Eclipse Ventures had this to say on a recent LinkedIn post:

• I found it interesting they singled out Pharma and drug-discovery applications.

15 PhDs already at Quantum Source

In terms of pedigree, I know some Quantum startups that barely have any PhDs. Not the case here.

The company employs twenty-five physicists and engineers, fifteen of whom hold PhD degrees.

Leaders with Entrepreneur Pedigree

1. Oded Melamed, CEO, who was the co-founder and CEO of Altair Semiconductor acquired by Sony;

2. Gil Semo, VP R&D, who was among the founding team of Anobit Technologies acquired by Apple, who later became the Director of Platform Architecture at Apple in Israel;

3. Dan Charash, Chairman, who was the co-founder and CEO of Provigent acquired by Broadcom; and

4. Prof. Barak Dayan, Senior Scientist and founder and head of the Quantum Optics lab at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The company employs twenty-five physicists and engineers, fifteen of whom hold PhD degrees.
