The Cold Tech War is about to Get Hot for Quantum Computing
Quantum computing is Next for bans and sanctions vs. China.
Hey Everyone,
U.S. sanctions that are pretty draconian in the semiconductor are also likely to hit China’s quantum computing sector.
The Biden administration is exploring new export controls that would include investment in nascent quantum computing and artificial intelligence technologies. Five months after former Google CEO, Eric Schmidt was appointed to the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence and it seems a lot has occurred since his entry into this position.
The potential plans, which are in an early stage, are focused on the still-experimental field of quantum computing, as well as artificial intelligence software.
The chip wars appear to be biting in China, as the country’s semiconductor imports dropped 12.4 percent in the month of September, according to official customs data published by the country. Chinese stocks are down in the West and confidence is low with the country likely experiencing a recession, but fudging the numbers (even more than usual).
However the chip sanctions invite retaliation from China. The efforts, if implemented, would follow separate restrictions announced earlier this month aimed at stunting Beijing’s ability to deploy cutting-edge semiconductors in weapons and surveillance systems.
